Ballyfinboy House was built at the end of the eighteenth century. It is a protected structure and is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.

Set on a stunning 1.6 ha ( 4 acre) site, it is approached from the public road by a private serpentine carriage avenue.

The front facade is in the classic Georgian style: a three bay two storey detached residence with large timber sash windows and a double hall door with fan light, south facing to maximise the light pouring in across the open paddocks.

On the front and sides of the house are glorious wisteria, Boston ivy, Virginia creeper and climbing hydrangea giving a beautiful seasonal display of colour.

The paddocks are bound to the road frontage by a cut stone wall at the corner of which is a small stile leading to the old village water pump.

The present owners of Ballyfinboy House relocated from Sandycove, Co. Dublin in 2003, undertaking extensive repair and renovation work.

All this work was carried out to the highest and most exacting conservation standards; the main contractor at the time pointed out one of the sash window frames where, as a young apprentice he had carved his initials there next to those of his father, when they had both worked on the house in the 1960s.

As well as the historical and architectural character of the house, the grounds are also impressive. In an informal survey undertaken in 2022 for the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland there were over two hundred species of flowering plants noted on the property: everything from tiny pimpernels to towering beeches.

Biodiversity is very much in abundance with badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, buzzards, pheasants, owls, and bats being regular welcome visitors. Robins, finches, blue tits, sparrows, and doves all flock to the backyard pond and bird feeders.

A definite highlight each year is seeing a flock of starlings take flight, and wheel overhead in mesmerising and seemingly impossible patterns during their nightly murmuration.

Lough Derg on the River Shannon is a stone’s throw away, with a host of water sports and leisure pursuits including cold water swimming, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing, fishing, walking, and bird watching.

Flowing right past the house is the Ballyfinboy river with a recently opened riverside walking loop and civic amenities. Ballinderry village has a thriving bar/restaurant, and the lakeside communities of Terryglass, Portumna, Puckane and Dromineer are within easy reach while the cities of Galway and Limerick are less than an hour’s drive away. There is easy access to M7 motorway and to Shannon airport.

The immediate surrounds of the house are maintained in elegant lawns with walled flower and herb gardens, split level patio and seating areas, a large glasshouse with electricity and water within and an ornamental pond with fountain and underwater lighting. There is also a large children’s play area. To the end of the gardens are a series of mature cherry, apple and pear trees leading to an aspen wood crossed by mown walkways and planted with an understorey of young hazel, elm, beech, and oak. The gardens have shaded and secluded seating and barbeque areas. To the rear of the house is a series out outbuildings; a workshop with electricity and extensive storage and workbenches, a garage with cobblestone floor, a stable with two loose boxes and a timber shed.
